A Queens man is in custody after police said he shot another man who lives in his apartment building on Wednesday before barricading himself inside his home.
The shots were fired before 11 a.m. on 54th Street in Woodside. Police arrived at the scene to find a 48-year-old man with a gunshot wound, telling officers his shooter lived inside the building. Police said the shooter then barricaded himself inside his apartment before ultimately turning the gun on himself.
Officials said one officer fired at the suspect after entering the building, but did not appear to hit him.
NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said the suspect fired from his apartment window as police pursued him, then barricaded himself inside and shot himself in the chest. Police used drone technology to see into his apartment.
“It is our belief he shot himself. He has a gunshot wound to the chest,” Maddrey said. “Our cameras went in first. They were able to see that he was laying on the floor. They were able hear him calling for help and we were able to communicate with our technology and then we were able to move in and safely put him under custody.”
Maddrey said police believe both men knew each other.
“We believe there was some kind of dispute between our suspect and the person who was shot,” he said. “We do believe they both live in the same building.”
The victim was expected to survive and the suspect’s condition was unknown, the NYPD said. Police shared no further information on the suspect, though Maddrey said he was known to the department.
An investigation was ongoing, police said.
