Respawn's Star Wars Jedi Franchise Surpasses 40 Million Players

According to EA’s Laura Miele, the Star Wars Jedi franchise has garnered more than 40 million players in its nearly five-year life.

During a presentation for the company's investor call (and noted by Good), Honey announced the milestone and further stated that EA's entire Star Wars game series has surpassed $5 billion in net revenue.

Using this metric, he further stated that EA has “made some of the highest-quality, best-selling Star Wars games of all time.”

It's unclear how this translates into sales for Respawn's action-adventure franchise. Indeed, EA has been continually cautious on commercial performance in 2023 Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which just arrived on latest generation (read: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) today.

Star Wars games that have been, are and will be made

EA secured an exclusivity deal to make the “core” Star Wars console games in October 2014 (which expires October 24, 2024). So far, its output includes the Jedi games, DICE's Star Wars Battlefront duology, and EA Motive. Star Wars Squadrons.

EA's time with the franchise also led to two high-profile cancellations: “Ragtag Project” from Visceral Games and, more recently, a first person shooter in progress at Respawn.

After the controversial launch of DICE Star Wars Battlefront IIDisney has started to let others third party studies make games for the franchise. Together with Zynga Star Wars Hunters and Ubisoft Star Wars Outlaws, Quantic Dream is developing Star Wars Eclipse.

Saber Interactive, recently known for Warhammer 40K: Space Marines II, is also working on a remake of BioWare's 2005 game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Bit reactoranother EA studio, is still working on a Star Wars strategy game.

Speaking about the Jedi games, Miele added that Respawn is working on Star Wars Jedi 3, and that it will be “the final chapter” in the series. Last year, series director Stig Asmussen left Respawn for unknown reasons.

There have been a amount of Star Wars games and, last year, Game Developer looked back on lessons learned from a franchise that has lasted forever.
