Rob Lowe guest stars on Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson's latest episode Where Everyone Knows Your Name made a shocking admission on her podcast that she hooked up with Michael J. Fox during the height of their fame in the '80s.
Although Lowe and Danson were both very famous at the time, Danson admitted that they weren't in the same circles or really knew each other at the time. However, the two actors realized they had a mutual friend, actress and political activist Jane Fonda, which led Lowe to reminisce about his activism days.
“My favorite, you know, when you want to shut down a nuclear power plant, the two people who would be best placed to do it are definitely me and Meg Ryan,” the 60-year-old joked self-deprecatingly. “So you know when we show up it’s going to make you rethink your energy priorities.”
Lowe then talked about his time as a member of the Hollywood Clean Water Caravan political campaign in support of Proposition 65, an initiative aimed at tightening state toxic waste laws. The bus tour, filled with some of the biggest names of the '80s, traveled all over California to educate voters on the issue. It was on the bus tour that Lowe and Fox inadvertently ran afoul of the police.
“I remember it like it was yesterday. I love doing all of these things,” Parks and Recreation The star explained that the duo clearly missed each other back then, too. “It was big producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, and there was a bus tour of California for Prop 65, which was about cleaning up our water system, and everyone on the planet was on board with it.”
“But there were two different buses, so it turns out you weren’t on either one,” Lowe said, and Danson confirmed this.
“We got pulled over for speeding — and Michael J. Fox and I were smoking weed off the top of a Greyhound bus,” he continued. “And the police pulled us over and it was like a clown car. Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Judd Nelson, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Robert Downey Jr., Jane Fonda, Danny Glover came out.”
When asked if they were stopped because of smoke, Lowe laughed and said: “Michael and I had opened the emergency hatch on top and were smoking a joint.”
Unfortunately, the subject changed before we could get into the details, but apparently the young players didn't face any charges for their carelessness. Of course, it's probably easy enough to look back and laugh, considering Lowe has been sober since 1990, just a few years after the incident.
