Robert Downey Jr. Reveals What Convinced Him to Return to the MCU

Robert Downey Jr. pioneered the Marvel Cinematic Universe by starring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008. Iron ManHe reprised this role in the following films: Captain America: Civil War and three Avengers movies, but his involvement in the MCU was believed to be over for years. He shocked the world earlier this month when he announced that he would be taking on a new character in two new Marvel movies, but the road to get there wasn't a smooth one.

Downey Jr. recently spoke about the conversation he had with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige that changed his mind about returning to the MCU. Hollywood Reporter'S Prize Chat podcasts.

“Susan [Downey] “I was sitting with Feige at one point, and he said, 'If you come back,' and Susan said, 'Wait, what are you coming back as?'” he recounted.

“And he mentioned Victor Von Doom,” he continued. “And I looked at it as a character and said, 'Wow.' But then he said, 'Let's fix Victor Von Doom.'”

Downey Jr. was able to seal the deal after meeting with Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger at Iger's home. “We go to Iger's house and we sit down, and I'm like, 'I just really want to be…' and he's like, 'I like it.' He liked it,” he recalls.

As for what exactly the projects will entail, Downey Jr. has remained mum.

“I can't say much about it [it]”But what's happening there right now is so far beyond what's possible for me, so it's not surprising that it's mysterious to me. And also, it's the only way I feel like I can give a certain audience that's looking for entertainment something that they can look forward to experiencing in a way that I can continue to develop my interest in the future of entertainment,” he said.

Downey will portray Dr. Victor von Doom in the upcoming film. Avengers: Judgment Day In 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars In 2027.
