unfair, as other actors were brought back to the franchise. - Rather than portraying Ash, Álvarez made sure to create a different character in Holm's likeness.

Alien: Romulus Director Fede Alvarez explains why his film uses the character of the late Ian Holm. In the original Alien in the film, Holm played Ash, later revealed to be a synthetic scientist working for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.
when talking to DiversityAlvarez explained why she decided to use Holm's likeness Alien: Romulus and how he ensured it was done respectfully. Check out his comments below:
It was unfair in a way. I felt it was unfair that Lance Henriksen and Michael Fassbender made a lot of appearances. And I felt it was crazy that Ian Holm never came back.
In talking with Ridley, we both came up with the idea that if he looked like Ian Holm, or even Ian Holm, as opposed to being Ash. We would never dare to do it again, because you can't duplicate the talent of an actor with any technology. You can never capture the nuance of someone's performance and choices. So we created a different character, but he shares the same similarity.
Then the first thing I did was personally call his widow, family and children to make sure everyone was on board with the idea. His widow told me that in the last 10 years of his life, Ian felt that Hollywood was cold to him and that he didn't get many offers. And he said he would love to be invited back to Alien because he loved Ridley and he loved the franchise.
I remember someone said, “we are going to be replaced as actors.” And I said, “Man, if I hire you, it's costing me one person's money. You have to hire literally 45 people to do it like that. And you still have to hire the actor who's doing the play!”
More to come…
