San Francisco 49ers Star Announces Daughter's Death

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward and his family are grieving following the death of his one-year-old daughter on October 28.

“We are so sorry to hear of the passing of our beautiful daughter, Amani Joy, on Monday morning,” the NFL star wrote on Instagram with a photo of the smiling baby. “She was the best blessing we could have asked for and her cheerful spirit made us smile from ear to ear. She taught us patience, trust and a positive outlook on life. She showed us true strength and courage. She overcame everything. She endured adversity at a young age and was always happy, filling every room with her smile.” It was illuminating.”

“Having the privilege of being his parents and seeing the world through his eyes has changed us for the better,” he concluded. “She will forever be daddy's best friend and mommy's little girl. We will miss and love you forever, Amani Joy.”

The cause of Ward's daughter's death was not disclosed. Amani and her mother, Monique Cook, had attended a 49ers game just hours before she died Sunday, according to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.

“He put her to bed Sunday night and it was over Monday morning,” Shanahan told KNBR. “This is everyone's worst fear, but it's hard for this to happen to anyone. [you know] It's as devastating and devastating as it gets.”

Ward has spoken out about Amani Joy's health issues in the past. Last December, he spoke with then-teammate Arik Armstead about his journey since his birth in November 2022.

“He was born with two holes in his heart,” Ward told Armstead. Third and Long podcast. “The doctor said, 'It would be better if the holes were closed. One closed and the other one continued to expand, reaching the size of a fist… They said we need to do the surgery as soon as possible, because this is a really serious surgery. Just feel sorry for him, it's out of your hands, about that.” There's nothing you can do.”

Ward, a first-time Pro Bowl player last season, credited his daughter with helping him on the field.

“It was on my conscience,” Ward said NBC Sports last year. “Why can't I connect with my daughter? This is my seed. I couldn't connect with him at all and it hurt my feelings. It was on my mind a lot. I'm not trying to make excuses, but ever since we got close, I've been going crazy. “I thank God and my daughter for making this relationship a good one.”
