Mark Waid and Josie Campbell End 80-Year Feud

Shazam flies

When the new sequel Shazam returned last year, writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora began redefining the relationship between Billy and the Captain. This carried over to Josie Campbell's run. Over Shazam's 80-year history, different creators have approached this relationship in different ways: some saw them as two separate people, while others saw the Captain as a more mature Billy. Waid and Campbell revealed that Billy and the Captain were actually two different people, ending an eight-year feud.

Billy becomes increasingly wary of the Captain and the influence he has on his life, and he shirks his responsibility.

With this in mind, Waid and later Campbell showed what happens when this relationship is disrupted and broken. Billy becomes increasingly wary of the Captain and the influence he has on his life, and he shirks his responsibility. From his magical dimension, he watches the battle with King Kull, begging Captain Billy to free him. Kull and his legions threaten Philadelphia, and Mary prevails. Even with his and his family's back against the wall, Billy refuses to speak up and becomes the Captain.

The metamorphosis of the relationship between Billy Batson and the Captain represents a major shift for Shazam moving forward. If Billy can't trust his alter ego, he can't access his powers and therefore Shazam. Billy is effectively over Shazam's legacy and Black Man have achieved something that Mister Mind and Sivana have not been able to do for over 80 years. While Billy and the Captain will no doubt eventually reconcile, for now, the two founders' prospects are bleak, and the DC Universe is at a great loss without them.
