Snowstorm cancels hundreds of flights at NYC airports

Tuesday’s snowstorm canceled hundreds of flights at airports in the New York City area, with LaGuardia canceling more than 35% of its flights, Newark Liberty International canceling 20%, and John F. Kennedy International canceling 15%, according to flight tracking website FlightAware, which culls data from government and private sources. Many other flights were delayed.

The Federal Aviation Administration encouraged passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport. Current forecasts call for around 6 to 9 inches of total snowfall in the region, and icy conditions could slow the resumption of normal airport operations.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday. More than 1 inch of snow was measured at Newark Airport by 7 a.m., compared to roughly 5 inches at both LaGuardia and JFK, according to the National Weather Service.

A spokesperson for the Port Authority said they could not specify what was causing the cancellations but urged travelers to check their flight status.

Around noon, PATH trains were delayed between New Jersey and New York because of a power outage at the World Trade Center station, but normal service had resumed and the outage was restored before 1 p.m., the train service said.

The MTA said Metro-North Railroad was reporting 10- to 15-minute delays on the Hudson Line due to the weather. Long Island Rail Road was running on or close to schedule, according to the transit authority. A MTA spokesperson told Gothamist there had been no major bus disruptions so far Tuesday.

Meanwhile, NJ Transit said there was a 20-minute delay on the Pascack Valley Line and a 35-minute delay on the Bergen County Line because of equipment issues.
