Warning: Contains spoilers for Star Trek: The Struggle #17!
After 58 years Star Trek reveals why the universe uses quadrants even though it is infinite. The galaxy is a huge place and too big for a starship to travel in a lifetime. The sheer size of the galaxy forced the Federation and other galactic powers to develop a system of 'quadrants' to divide it and now Star Trek: The Struggle #17 reveals how and why it was created.
So, in order to crunch the vast amount of data needed to run a starship into computers, the galactic powers, including the Federation, created a system of quadrants.
Star Trek: The Struggle #17 Written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Angel Unzueta. Currently an instructor at the Starfleet Academy, Chief O'Brien lectures on automaton theory. O'Brien asks students to test the limits of the theory, stating that it breaks down when faced with infinity. The galaxy is huge and full of unexpected elements. So, in order to crunch the vast amount of data needed to run a starship into computers, the galactic powers, including the Federation, created a system of quadrants.
O'Brien concludes by stating that it is a matter of accepting the limitations and developing solutions for them.
Star Trek The Origin of the Quadrant System Has Never Been Explained – Until Now
The Star Trek The universe is vast
The quadrant system is an integral part of it Star Trek universe, but has not always been used consistently. In the first episodes of the classic Star Trek series, the terms “quadrant” and “sector” are used seemingly interchangeably. as Star Trek knowledge was consolidated, a consistent system was created based on four different quadrants: Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma. The quadrants are massive: in Star Trek: Voyager's in the series premiere, the ship jumped from Alpha to Delta. It was estimated that it would take about 80 years Voyager get home – with maximum tilt.

To make the vast quadrants more manageable, the Federation and other galactic powers have divided them into sectors, with Earth at the center of Sector 001. The creation of sectors within the quadrants allowed starship computers to perform their calculations more efficiently. As explained by Chief O'Brien, this is not only a perfect example of solving the limitations of automata theory, but also a testament to the creativity inherent in all species. Critics argue that the system is Earth- and man-centered, but the quadrant system is still a useful tool.
Star Trek Manufacturers should accept this origin for the Quadrant System
Its Origins Are Believable in the Real World
The origin of the quadrant system is a neat part of internal world building Star Trek universe, explains the main piece of lore. Since this revelation takes place in the comics, it is non-canon, according to Paramount's policy. However, some elements are licensed Star Trek media like the novels became canon like Sulu and Uhura's first names. The origin of the quadrants, as shown Star Trek: The Struggle #17 is based on real-world scientific theory and the future Star Trek showrunners could easily adapt this theory to the screen.
