Study Finds How Many Cups of Coffee You Drink a Day May Benefit Your Heart

It turns out that your coffee addiction may have some health benefits for your heart.

A study published in a new study by the Endocrine Society Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism set out to examine how regularly consuming moderate amounts of coffee or caffeine may protect us from developing multiple cardiometabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke. To do this, they examined the medical information of nearly 300,000 UK Biobank participants to learn more about coffee consumption and cardiometabolic disease.

The team found that moderate regular coffee or caffeine consumption was associated with a lower risk of new-onset cardiometabolic multimorbidity, defined as the presence of at least two cardiometabolic diseases simultaneously.

Drinking three cups of coffee a day may seem excessive to some, but it may be the ideal amount to reap the benefits of this popular beverage.

“Consuming three cups of coffee or 200 to 300 milligrams [of] “Caffeine taken once a day may help reduce the risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity in individuals without any cardiometabolic disease,” said Chaofu Ke, lead author of the study, commenting on the findings. Science Journal.”“The findings highlight that encouraging moderate coffee or caffeine intake as a dietary habit in healthy individuals may have broad benefits in preventing cardiometabolic multimorbidity.”

Compared with those who consumed no caffeine or less than 100 milligrams per day, those who consumed moderate amounts of coffee (three drinks per day) or caffeine (200 to 300 milligrams per day) had a 48.1% or 40.7% lower risk of new-onset cardiometabolic multimorbidity. The average cup of coffee contains about 95 milligrams of caffeine.

This is the latest study to show that more than one cup of coffee per day has heart health benefits. However, since this study is observational, it does not confirm a true link between caffeine and heart health, but rather a correlation or relationship. More direct research is needed on this phenomenon to determine just how much coffee consumption may help prevent cardiovascular problems.

So don't start drinking liters of coffee right away.
