Subway conductor slashed in Brooklyn is in stable condition, police say

A subway conductor was slashed in the neck early Thursday morning at a Brooklyn station, while looking out the train’s window for a routine safety check, according to police.

The southbound A train was pulling into the Fulton Street and Rockaway Avenue Station in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 3:40 a.m. when the 59-year-old conductor was assaulted by a man on the platform, NYPD officials said.

The conductor was slashed by an unknown object, police said, and the attack appeared to be unprovoked.

He was taken to NYC Health + Hospital/ Bellevue in stable condition.

Police are searching for a male suspect wearing a blue vest who fled the subway station after the attack. No arrests have been made.

The incident comes just days after the MTA launched a new pilot program aimed at protecting conductors from similar assaults as they do mandatory safety checks.

The agency installed physical barriers at a designated “no standing zone” at the 125th Street station on the 4/5/6 line in Harlem, in order to deter riders from standing too close to train workers.

Depending on the results of the program, the barriers could be installed at other stations around the city, according to the MTA.

Thursday’s attack also comes on the heels of three murders in the subway system so far this year, despite a surge of police officers in public transit and more surveillance.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
