Super Bowl Champion Offers $1.5 Million to Release Chicken Wing Thief

The Kansas City Chiefs have had an incredible Super Bowl record in recent years, winning three championships since the start of the decade. But the early 2020s are remembered as the beginning of the COVID pandemic, and one woman’s actions in those days led a Chiefs player to defend her.

Chicago-area school district superintendent Vera Liddell was found guilty of the bizarre crime of stealing $1.5 million worth of chicken wings on Aug. 9 and sentenced to nine years in prison for her actions. But she found a backer in Chiefs defensive end and three-time Super Bowl champion Chris Jones, who offered to help bail her out by paying for the wings.

In his letter to X, Jones said, “I will pay for the wings he stole to save him.”

It all started when Liddell was tasked with ordering meat for take-home meals for students learning remotely during the pandemic. WGNProsecutors said he placed the orders and billed between July 2020 and February 2022. ABC News.

The game was up last year when an audit revealed the district’s food services department was $300,000 over its annual budget. The district’s business manager found $1.5 million worth of chicken wing receipts, raising eyebrows because the bone-in food wasn’t being served to students. Prosecutors said she ordered more than 11,000 cases of chicken wings between August and November 2021 and picked them up in a district cargo van. CBS News.

It is not yet clear whether Jones' offer will be accepted by local governments.
