Supercell has acquired British studio Space Ape Games after increasing its stake in the London-based company.
As reported by GamesIndustry.bizSupercell already owned a majority stake in Beatstar AND Transformers: Earth Wars developer.
THE Clash of clans Creator invested $37 million in Space Ape Games in 2022bringing its participation in the study to 75%. Previously, it invested $56.6 million in the studio.
Supercell is owned by Tencent, which holds stakes in major companies such as Remedy, Techland, FromSoftware and Epic Games. It wholly owns other major studios including Riot Games, Funcom and Sumo Group.
Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen said the acquisition of Space Ape will make the company more agile and efficient. “We believe the best teams make the best games, so we're really excited to find our place within London's incredible gaming ecosystem by joining forces with Space Ape,” he said.
“This move will bring great new colleagues and make our game teams even stronger. With the best talent globally, we move forward faster in our mission to create great games that as many people as possible can play for years to come and that May they be remembered forever.”
Space Ape CEO John Earner indicated that the move was a natural evolution of the existing partnership between the two companies. “We have loved working closely with Supercell for many years and this move is the next phase of this partnership,” he said. “I am so proud of Space Ape's contributions to the gaming industry over the past twelve years. I can't wait to take this next step in our evolution as part of the Supercell team.”
