Ever the fast-food innovator, Taco Bell is constantly introducing new menu items. But unfortunately, that ever-changing menu sometimes leaves fans in the dust. That's why the chain is testing a new “Nostalgic Menu” to bring back items that have been out of production for decades, many of which haven't been available for years.
Starting Thursday, Aug. 15, Taco Bell will offer a special menu featuring “iconic hits” from the '60s to 2000s, including the Tostada, Green Burrito, Meximelt, Gordita and Caramel Apple Empanada. While the throwback items will initially only be available for a limited time at three Taco Bell locations in Southern California, the company hopes to roll out the menu nationwide later this year.
Here is a list of fan favorites:
- Tostada (1960s)The Tostada, one of the original items on Taco Bell's menu when it opened in 1962, “consists of a crispy corn tostada shell layered with delicious refried beans, tangy red sauce, crispy lettuce and shredded cheese.” It will be available for $2.19.
- Green Burrito (1970s)This “tasty” burrito, which gained popularity in the '70s, is “loaded with delicious refried beans, crispy onions, shredded cheddar cheese, and a green sauce made with green chiles, tomatillos, jalapeño peppers, and spices.” It will be available for $2.49.
- Meximelt (1980s)The Meximelt: A “legendary” '80s fan favorite, the Meximelt is made with fresh-made daily pico de Gallo and a blend of mozzarella, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, all melted into a tortilla with “crave-inducing spicy beef.” It will be available for $2.99.
- Beef Gordita Supreme (1990s)The Gordita: A “pillowy warm pita filled with deliciously seasoned beef,” featuring low-fat sour cream, crispy lettuce, a blend of mozzarella, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, and topped with diced tomatoes. It will retail for $2.99.
- Caramel Apple Empanada (2000s)The latest item on the nostalgia menu is also the only dessert item. It's described as “a golden-brown empanada with a crispy exterior filled with apple pieces and a deliciously creamy filling with notes of caramel.” It'll retail for $2.99.
“Our rich history has built a vault of desirable products that our fans are passionate about, and we’re constantly exploring ways to reintroduce those that deliver the comfort and value they’re looking for,” Taco Bell chief marketing officer Taylor Montgomery said in a statement. “Now, we’re excited to bring two groups of fans together: those who fondly remember these menu items and those who have yet to experience the taste of a Caramel Apple Empanada or take their first bite of a Meximelt with this menu.”
The Nostalgic Menu will be available at Taco Bell locations in Barranca, CA and Brea, CA from August 15-21; and at the Fullerton, CA restaurant from August 15-19, while supplies last.
