The man who fell to his death in Utah's Zion National Park last week has been identified. Software maker Opiniion confirmed in a statement on Oct. 7 that Justin Bingham, 40, the company's CEO and father of four, was the person killed in the canyoning accident last Saturday.
“Justin was involved in a tragic accident while enjoying one of his greatest passions, exploring the outdoors,” the statement said. “Despite the best efforts of more than 50 team members of various rescue teams, he passed away on the night of Saturday, October 1. 5, 2024.”
According to a press release from the National Parks Department (NPS), Bingham was canyoning with three other people near Heaps Canyon around 6 p.m. when he suddenly slipped and fell between 150 and 200 feet. Despite the park's quick intervention, Bingham died before he could be airlifted to the hospital.
“Justin was a visionary who believed in the power of true connections with both our customers and our team,” Opiniion's statement said. “His commitment to building meaningful relationships made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Justin's spirit of adventure and dedication to living life to the fullest will be greatly missed.”
A statement released early Friday morning on behalf of Bingham's wife, Lindsay, reveals the family's devastation. “It is with broken hearts that we share the untimely passing of our hero, Justin Bingham. The world has lost a legend. His family has lost their rock. Lindsay has lost the love of her life. Her children have lost their best friend,” the statement said. . “But we didn't lose hope. Justin loved life more than anything. His passion for living was surpassed only by his devotion to his family. His wife and four precious children were his reason for living, the reason he got out of bed every morning and his only purpose in the world.
His wife's statement continued: “He never wanted to leave them like this, but we pray that he will be able to see the earthly angelic hosts surrounding his family in this most desolate time.” “There are no words to describe the pain or confusion we are all feeling right now, but if you knew Justin you would know he would infuse this moment with optimism and positivity.”
Zion National Park and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are investigating the exact cause of Bingham's death.
