In Shannon Sharpe's latest interview Club Shay Shay podcasts, Horror movie After making a “terrible” deal in the first episode, veteran Marlon Wayans explained why he and his family are no longer associated with the legendary comedy series they created. “I'm gonna have to drink to this, man,” Wayans told Sharpe, then poured himself a large cocktail and told the story.
Horror movie Marlon Wayans conceived the script with his brothers Shawn Wayans and Keenan Ivory Wayans, and helped create it with Buddy Johnson and Phil Beauman, who were writing the script at the time. “We got an absolutely terrible deal for the first movie. But we got a good deal for the second movie,” Wayans explained, after the actor achieved “unheard of” box office success. Horror movie and for the immediate sequel the studio promised a deal of around $30 million Scary Movie 3.
But when it came time to make an offer, Wayans told Sharpe, “They're offering the same amount we made the first offer.” “Do you get that high feeling?” he added. “We got three times the amount.”
“They were terrible people. They were terrible people,” Wayans continued of the Weinsteins. “They took the franchise from us, they took it from us. And then they stole the idea for a third one. They took it from us and we couldn't make a deal so they gave it to someone else. So, they gave it to someone else and they didn't tell us. We read about it in the papers.”
The baton was passed to David Zucker, the brains behind this work. Aeroplane!Despite these roots, however, the franchise struggled to find the financial success it initially enjoyed and strayed further from its initial concept.
“You can try, but you can’t do Wayans’ shit without the Wayans,” Wayans said. “You can try, but you’re going to lose a lot of money,” he added, noting that his family has “many years of excellence” behind them. “Between me and Shawn and Keenan, Damon, Kim, we have 200 years of comedy history,” he said of his other siblings. “You can’t put just anyone over them.”
The comedian continued to say that while he wishes he could sue the Weinsteins for stealing his ideas, karma has done the trick for him. “Sometimes you don't have to do anything because God will do anything—God's vengeance,” Wayans said of the criminal acts that brought down Harvey Weinstein. “When God comes for you, you have to trust God. You don't retaliate, vengeance is mine.”
In the meantime, Wayans and the rest of his family are getting by just fine. “We’re moving on, we’ve made our money,” he said. White Chicks Another classic has been created. Little Man “We've created another classic. We're just doing our job.”
