When First Desk arrives at West Acres, it is revealed that Diana Taverner has not been appointed as the permanent Director General of MI5. Instead, he filled in temporarily after season 3's massive MI5 revelations – creating immediate tension given his apparent ambition.

The new agency head is Claude Whelan (James Callis), who doesn't seem like the most qualified or capable choice, especially compared to Taverner. Whelan even offers Taverner to continue attending some meetings in his place because he is a more familiar face. It's hard to say whether Whelan will continue, but still Slow horses MI5 is not always accurate with its description.

Emma Flyte Called Lamb Not Too Upset By The News

Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley), the new head of dogs at MI5, invites Jackson Lamb to David Cartwright's house. Flyte explains that they found River's ID and wallet on the body, but they want to go through the formalities of identifying the victim's remains. In typical Lamb style, Jackson jokes about the situation, noting that it's hard to identify a body without a face.

…Lamb's cold-as-a-cucumber approach is the first big red flag that maybe the body isn't River Cartwright's.

It cannot be denied that Jackson Lamb's reaction to the crime scene was strange. Aside from David Cartwright's confused reaction—which goes from saying the man isn't River to complaining about his job—Lamb's cool-as-a-cucumber approach is perhaps the first major red flag that the body doesn't belong to River Cartwright. (Of course, the episode title hints at that.) Regardless of what he really thinks, Lamb tells Flyte that does tea. On his way out, the ever-rude and flattering Lamb continues to give Flyte the cold shoulder.

As Roddy Ho begins to remove the electronics from River's desk, the rest of the team asks him what's going on. Louisa fears that she has steered the river in the wrong direction…

As Roddy packs River's things, Louise shakes her head in despair. Louise feels personally responsible for what happened between Guy River and her grandfather. Based on her earlier conversation with River, Louise fears that she has steered River in the wrong direction by offering to stop at her grandfather's house for the night. No one says much to quell Louisa's guilt. With his signature impeccable bad timing, Roddy mentions that he has a girlfriend, which is brilliant news – although his co-stars don't necessarily feel the same way.

2 Lamb visited Standish, who was with David Cartwright

Standish At First Lies To Lamb About Knowing The River Is Still Alive

Perhaps hoping to prove his imagination right, Jackson Lamb goes to the Standish house to learn more about David and the (real) River's whereabouts. When Lamb arrives, Standish looks at newspaper articles about the bombing; it is clear that the MI5 operative has not completely given up his previous work. Standish seems annoyed by Lamb's arrival, though Jackson presses his former colleague for information, suggesting that he is harboring David Cartwright.. Standish deflects Lamb's line of questioning until he points out that he's not doing a very good job of lying about what he knows.

You're not shocked that River is alive because you've seen her,” Lamb says after he theorizes that the dead man in David's bathroom is an impostor. As Standish does a double take, Lamb shrugs her shoulder and indicates that she saw River's car parked outside. Unable to lie anymore, Standish admits that River stopped by but is now gone.
