Designed for pilots of the First Order's elite Special Forces, the Special Forces Tie Fighter includes a shield, hyperdrive, second seat, ordnance, and a gunner's turret. Such features were new to the Empire—its TIE Advanced and TIE Defender ships were equipped with shields and munitions—but commonplace in the First Order.

The First Order was able to achieve these vastly improved TIE Fighters due to several factors. In addition to technological advances, the First Order had to protect its pilots more than the Empire's Starfighter Corps.
