Grand Theft Hamlet follows a pair of actors left unemployed due to COVID-19 in 2021. While isolated, they choose to reenact the classic Shakespeare play within Rockstar's popular live-action detective game.

The film premiered at South by Southwest earlier this year and received rave reviews, as well as taking home the festival's documentary jury prize, along with others during his festival.

Machinima lives again

Grand Theft Hamlet continues the art form of machinima, which is the use of video game footage to create a narrative film or television show.

The most popular example of this is Red vs. Blue, the web series of the now defunct Rooster teeth production. Over the course of the show, it was made using all the main games from Halo (and some remasters), the 2010 spinoff Halo Reach, and Bungie's Marathon trilogy.

Even before Halo 3 featured in-game recording to make the process easier for directors, the series was often used for machinma. Over the years, other web series and movies have been made into non-Halo games, such as Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series, Half-life 2 AND EarthquakeAND World of Warcraft.

Even some TV shows like South Park or CSI have used machinima for an episode, although these examples are much smaller than actual machinima.
