With the better part of his first decade in the works, Robert Kirkman offers a disappointing update on live action. Invincible movie. Long before Kirkman teamed up with Simon Racioppa and Prime Video for the hit animated show, the comic creator first worked with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to develop a live-action film based on the graphic novel series. It is still under development. We are still working with Universal. You know, the show is going really well. I think the movie should be perfect. And so it takes a lot of time, like fitting the pieces together and getting everything up and running so we can go out and make it as good as possible. So it's been in development for a long time and will probably be developed for a while longer. As far as the show is concerned, it still has to stay true to Invincible in some interesting ways, as it has to deliver a different experience.
But it should be its own thing. He must stand on his own. And so it's something we spend a lot of time on. But I think it will be great when it finally happens. I think it was difficult. I think you can, which is why the development process takes so long because it's hard to figure out, “Okay, the comic book is one thing, and then this animated series is another thing, and now it has to be a movie. This third thing has to provide a new experience, but maybe tell the same story, maybe tell a different story.” These are the things we are trying to understand. And it has to be as good as the show, but it has to be better than the show in many ways because, you know, movies are difficult and you have to get audiences into theaters. And it's a process.
It is very difficult, but we have a good team behind it. I think we're going to do a great job, but it may take a long time for Timothée Chalamet to play Omni-Man. The film process is definitely getting tighter. And while it can be frustrating at times, it's also a fun challenge. But the animated series, especially for us, I see it as an expanding process. I think there are a lot of different scenes, if you compare them to the comic, we do a lot more. We put more emotion into them. There is more dialogue going on. A little more character development happens.
Will an Invincible movie ever be made?
Kirkman's comments not only reflect his past updates on the project, but it also raises the question of when exactly live action is Invincible the film will be made. Based on the creator's latest discussion, it appears that he and the creative team behind the film will wait until the show's natural conclusion, though that timeline seems uncertain since Prime Video has already been renewed.
