A new board game based on the Lord of the Rings series will basically be a remake of the two-player title 7 Wonders Duel.

As teased in a Facebook post by the Asmodee France account earlier last week, it was revealed that the upcoming board game from co-designers Antoine Bauza and Bruno Cathala will be based on gameplay mechanics from the 7 Wonders series.

In an Instagram post from the official Asmodee USA account (Asmodee is a large board game company that distributes board games worldwide), it was confirmed that the previously announced board game will be The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth, a title based on the iconic fantasy book series by J.R.R. Tolkien. The board game will be set in the Middle-earth setting and will feature, according to the social media post, “powerful alliances, iconic journeys, and of course, The One Ring.”

In addition to this, the Instagram post confirmed that the Lord of the Rings game will be a “competitive strategy game” that will feature “mechanics from all 7 Wonders.” The image provided in the post shows a Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth game box, with the spine of the box showing that the game will support up to two players.

7 Wonders Duel is a spin-off of the family board game 7 Wonders, in which players compete to develop their own ancient civilizations. 7 Wonders Duel is a two-player board game that takes place over three eras, or rounds, with players collecting cards they need to acquire necessary resources or develop aspects of their respective societies.

Unlike the original 7 Wonders, players do not choose their cards from various hands of cards passed around the table, but instead play cards from a collection placed in front of them at the start of each round. Cards can only be obtained if they are uncovered by another card, with the option to build whatever is indicated on the card, discard it for more coins, or use it to build one of the four wonders of their civilization.

The resources needed for this can be purchased from the bank or acquired from cards placed in front of players. Whenever a resource is used to build a structure, its cost increases for the opponent of the player building it. Building will allow players to earn points or bonuses that they can use to achieve one of the game's possible victory conditions: either by advancing a player's military marker towards their opponent's capital, obtaining six different science symbols, or having the most points at the end of three rounds.

Bauza and Cathala are the original co-creators of 7 Wonders Duel. Repos Production (the company responsible for publishing The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth) has previously published both 7 Wonders and 7 Wonders Duel.

The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth is set to be released sometime this fall.
