Crystal Dynamics has revealed that the long-running Tomb Raider franchise has eclipsed sales 100 million copies in its almost thirty-year history.
The original tomb Raider turns 28 on October 24th and arrived in Europe for the first time for Sega Saturn. The studio called this achievement “a landmark achievement that few video game franchises have ever achieved.”
“We are extremely grateful for the collective spirit of adventure of the Tomb Raider community,” Crystal Dynamics continued, “and we look forward to all the journeys yet to come as Lara Croft and Tomb Raider continue to reach new heights. “
As for the best-selling entry in the series, Crystal Dynamics has kept this information well under wraps.
A new remastered trilogy for the original games was also announced. The collection will launch on February 14, 2025 and spans the years 1999 Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, 2000 Tomb Raider Chronicles, and 2003 Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness.
What is the future of Tomb Raider?
Tomb Raider has been around for a long time, and to be honest, it's never disappeared for long.
Crystal dynamics has been mum for years about Lara's next adventure, aside from the fact that it will be published by Amazon Games. The reboot trilogy, which began in 2013 with Tomb Raider, wrapped with Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018.
Speaking of Amazon, the company has hired Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of Fleabag, to direct a TV program based on the games, which could also be the starting point for a movie and a tie-in game.
In the more immediate present, Netflix and Powerhouse Animation have launched the animated series The legend of Lara Croft just yesterday, October 10th. That show is set in the reboot continuity and features Marvel alum Haley Atwell voicing the iconic treasure hunter.
