Timex's Coolest New Watch: The Q Timex 1975 Enigma Reissue

The 1970s were a difficult time for American watchmakers; domestic sales plummeted as inexpensive mechanical watches and digital quartz technology arrived from Asia, sending companies like Hamilton out of the U.S. and into Europe. The overall world of wristwatches seemed to change overnight.

Despite the turmoil (or perhaps because of it), Timex not only survived those tough times, but also innovated. Some of the brand’s most successful ideas from the turbulent ’70s have become the focus of various vintage reissues, many of them in the Q Timex and Marlin series.

Most recently, Timex, redesigned Q Timex 1975 Enigma Reissue version of the 1975 “Mystery Dial” model.

Let's be clear, this is a real “Mystery Dial” similar to the one from Cartier. In contrast, the Q Timex 1975 Enigma Reissue is a near-identical replica of the original “Mystery Dial” watch. The watch was initially born out of a desire to create the illusion of floating hands. A dark blue dot painted in the center of the underside of the crystal covers the main bezel, while the dark blue hands are made to match the dial. This creates the illusion that the red and white details are mysteriously floating.

There are a few changes to this reissue, which originally had a 33mm case. The new version is larger, at 37mm, and features a battery-powered quartz movement. Additionally, the caseback (pressed) is screwed down, unlike the original, and the stainless steel bracelet has been increased from the first model (19mm) to 20mm.
