United Passenger Beats Deaf Man in Violent, Unprovoked Attack

A deaf and non-speaking man on a United Airlines flight was subjected to a horrific attack at the hands of a passenger who allegedly beat him bloody until a good Samaritan intervened. The attack occurred just two hours after a flight from San Francisco to Washington Dulles in Virginia on Monday.

The FBI and FAA are currently investigating the incident in which the suspect, 44-year-old Everett Chad Nelson, reportedly got up to use the restroom. Nelson reportedly returned to his seat when he randomly attacked the victim, who was sitting in a window seat in a different row.

Witness Sandhya Gupta, one of the 82 passengers and six crew members on the flight, later described the horrific ordeal that befell San Francisco. ABC 7 News. Gupta was asleep when he said he was awakened by “blood-curdling screams” and then saw Nelson attack another passenger one row ahead of him.

“He was punching the guy in the window seat in front of me very violently and aggressively, and it was just bad,” Gupta recalled. “This wasn't like a bar room, I'd throw a few punches around, so that was pretty bad.”

Citing an FBI affidavit, CBS News Nelson reportedly brutally beat the defenseless victim for a full minute until another passenger pulled him off the man.

“We were basically wrapping this guy up, like we were kind of embracing him, and the attacker just went limp, which was a very strange thing,” Gupta explained. 'This doctor looked like he was trying to stop the bleeding, his face was a mess. It was very bad. There was blood spatter on the window shade and things like that.”

The crew learned that the victim could not hear or speak until the attack was over. Finally, after trying to communicate with sign language, he was able to talk to the crew using messages on his phone.

“We realized that he was deaf and non-verbal when he was trying to communicate with us through sign language,” Gupta continued. “He also kept texting me saying, ‘I’m so scared.’ Like, it was really bad.”

The alleged attacker apparently told flight attendants that the victim had attacked him on the street before, but the victim texted that she had “never seen the man before in her life.”

Fortunately, there was a doctor on board who could treat the man's wounds. And although he was not seriously harmed, he was understandably left “physically and mentally shaken” following the incident. The suspect was arrested shortly after the plane landed in Dulles and remained behind bars as of Thursday.

“Thanks to the rapid response of our crew and customers, a passenger was restrained on a flight from San Francisco to Washington Dulles on Monday after being physically aggressive towards another customer,” United Airlines said in a statement. he said. “The flight landed safely and was met by paramedics and local law enforcement.”
