Violence Erupts at Detroit Lions' Tailgate, One Dead

A party held after yesterday's Detroit Lions game turned into a disaster when one fan lost his life and another was injured in a shooting.

It all took place in Eastern Market, a neighborhood popular with tailgate parties and food vendors adjacent to Ford Field, home of the Lions. Associated PressAround 4:30 p.m., a fight broke out at a tailgate and quickly turned violent. Gunshots were heard shortly after, leaving one person dead and one person injured.

“This is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous,” Police Chief James White said after the shooting, according to WXYZ.. According to authorities, officers were nearby at the time of the incident because there were large crowds there. Gunshots were heard immediately.

“Rear-ending, drinking, guns, those things don't mix,” White said. “It's a beautiful day. It shouldn't have led to this.”

The suspect is reportedly a man in his 30s from Oak Park, a suburb of Detroit, and a legal gun owner with a concealed handgun permit. The man killed was a Detroit man in his 40s and the injured man was another Detroit man in his 20s. Police are investigating whether the men involved knew each other or were strangers who crossed paths.

Witness Ja'vion Oliver described a chaotic scene that left everyone around the hood of the vehicle terrified.

“After a gunshot rang out, everything went left,” Oliver told WXYZ. “It was crazy. You see kids running around… It was crazy.”

Charges in the suspect's case are currently pending.
