Warner Bros. Discovery’s dire financial straits may prompt it to sell off several “minor assets” as a means of avoiding a full-blown corporate “nuclear option.”
For Financial TimesSenior executives like CEO David Zaslav are considering selling off its video game division. That side of the business includes original franchises acquired by WBD (Mortal Kombat) and long-standing transmedia brands (DC, Harry Potter).
Following its merger with Discovery in 2022, WBD has repeatedly stated its desire to stay in the area in video games, especially in live-service. It had great success in 2023 with The Hogwarts Legacy, followed by the modest Multiverse and disappointing Suicide Squad in 2024.
According to the outlet, selling its games may be the only sale WBD can make without triggering complications, both legal and content-related. The company recently lost the media rights to NBA games and it's re-branding His Max originals are returning to HBO.
Selling is in WB's blood
Notably, this is the second time this decade that WB Games has potentially been up for sale.
Back inside again 2020when Warner Bros. was still owned by AT&TParties such as Microsoft and Take-Two were interested in purchasing the interactive division. At the time, a potential deal was valued at up to $4 billion.
With a potential sale pending at the time, it seemed like it had specifically targeted NetherRealm: instead of making Injustice 3 after 2019 Mortal Kombat 11 Role Playing Game he moved on to reboot the universe of Mortal Combat 1.
The sale never happened and WB Games remained standing as a separate entity. However, Microsoft never completely took its eye off the Warner ball: Leaked documents since 2023 shows that he wanted it Knights of Gotham, Mortal Kombat 1, AND Suicide Squad on Game Pass for between $50 million and $250 million each.
If WB Games were to be sold now, it’s unclear how much it would be worth, given the results of its 2023 and 2024 games mentioned above, along with Monolith Productions’ upcoming Wonder Woman title.
