Known for his stoicism and being a man of few words during his coaching career with the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick held a press conference after the arrest of Aaron Hernandez in 2013. and the Patriots' quick decision to release him. In the foreword he said: “As the head coach of the team, I am primarily responsible for the people we bring into the football operation. Our players are generally highly motivated and talented athletes from very different backgrounds. As for the whole process, I can tell you that we look at the history of each player from the moment we start discussing him..”
Belichick fielded questions from various reporters following his press conference on July 24, 2013. It was held nearly a month after Hernandez was arrested on June 26 of that year. “We will learn from this terrible experience. We will be a better team. I was advised to settle the situation once and for all and it was time for the New England Patriots to move on.” Belichick essentially echoed those sentiments throughout the 22-minute press conference, and was generally reluctant to reveal his personal experiences and thoughts on Hernandez and the situation.
