It's no surprise that Maddie is looking everywhere for a connection in episode 5. After discovering her own hidden past and the revelation of Seth's real father, Maddie is led to the location of the body of Tessie Durst (Bianca Belle), a young journalist who believes she can solve the mystery of Cleo Johnson's death. After Stephen's cold-blooded abduction, Maddie visits her mother, Kasia Zawadzkie, who initially gave the police a description of Reggie (Josiah Cross). When it comes to money, Kasia is broken: the tropical fish shop is still closed and her son's judgment is coming.

In Laura Lippman's novel, Maddie survives Kasia's confrontation with her book colleague. While Ferdie (Y'lan Noel) urges Maddie to leave her well enough alone, she runs into budding journalist Stephen's mother. (He is called Stephen Corwin in the novel.) Stephen's mother reveals that she helped kill her son. The lady in the lake's Tessie Durst and, desperate to avoid capture, stabs Maddie with the intention of killing her. However, Maddie survives and wakes up in a hospital room shortly after.
