This includes exploring different universes not every movie will necessarily be set within the main DCEU continuity.
Joker was the result of this idea, because it is in its own separate universe, unrelated to anything but its sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. This is similar to Matt Reeves' situation. Batmannot tied to any other continuity and set with spin-offs like currently. Penguin expands the universe. with Joker: Folie à Deux not having to fit into a specific universe, the film is free to take creative liberties with iconic DC characters.
Not being locked into one core universe allows several actors to play the same character. One thing to watch are the performances in each of his subsequent appearances. There's a downward trend for each that, despite being essentially synonymous with Margot Robbie's character, may not be as much of a draw as Harley Quinn was once thought. Of course, there's nuance to this discussion, but it's entirely believable that Gunn and Safran want to start fresh with some of DC's biggest characters, including Harley Quinn, who could unseat Robbie.
