After 21 years in the Marvel canon, Wolverinedaughter of Laura Kinney – X-23, also known as Wolverine and Talon – is dead, and he's probably not coming back. Laura, formerly believed to be Logan's clone but later revealed to be his biological daughter, has been fighting alongside the X-Men for years, finally falling as she fights to protect humanity and give mutants one last chance at survival.

Recently, Synch has Laura's psychic imprint in his mind after her body is destroyed. This kept Talon alive in a very real sense, as until recently the X-Men could use psychic imprints to resurrect their fallen heroes. Synch 'saving' Talon allowed them to communicate, allowing him to potentially return. However, in X-Men #31 Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto's Synch is called upon to rescue the X-Men from a Sentinel known as Nimrod, and must leave Laura's trail to do so.

The Death of the Longest X-Men Romance in History

Fighting Nimrod allows the X-Men to remove the Orc's ability to kill a large portion of humanity, which they achieve by interfering with the free medicine the X-Men previously distributed around the world. These humans were used as hostages to prevent the X-Men from fighting Orchis, who planned the extinction of the mutant species and the rise of artificial intelligence life as the planet's dominant life form.

However, while Synch and Laura's actions saved countless lives, they also came at a high cost.

Fans can take some solace in Laura's longevity, as a recent adventure trapped her and Synch in a prison known as the Vault for 100 years, and the two gradually fell in love.

Laura Kinney Is Officially Dead in Marvel Comics Canon

Wolverine's Daughter Killed by a High Evolutionary

In X-Men #30Laura and Synch went on a mission to steal technology from the High Evolutionary – a device the X-Men used to reverse Orchis' poison drug. Unfortunately, the god-like villain didn't like their presence and after a short fight it shattered despite Laura's powerful healing factor.

Fortunately, Synch was able to retain Laura's psychic imprint, allowing them to remain in contact and keeping the possibility that she could eventually return. Unfortunately, his ability to keep Laura 'alive' took a toll due to the great strain Synch's powers put on his body.

Wolverine's Daughter is probably gone for good

Bringing back Laura goes against Marvel's priorities

While superheroes rarely die permanently in the Marvel canon, Laura Kinney may be an exception. After escaping the Synch Vault, Laura was believed to be dead, eventually “resurrecting” her from her memories before the X-Men entered the structure. This created a younger clone – a new version of Laura Kinney who doesn't remember her life in the Vault. And in a classic X-Men twist, the older Laura is revealed to still be alive and has recently been freed from the Vault and has rejoined the team under the codename Talon.

Even when they were still active, the X-Men's resurrection protocols could only store one version of a person's psychic imprint, and the latter fans knew they were going with a teenage clone rather than the old original. In the real world, young Laura is the version fans know – a teenage hero who goes by “Wolverine” and currently works with her father on the X-Force roster.

Although the original older Laura feels more like a new characterand one that only exists within Marvel's 2019-2024 Krakoan Age and is currently wrapping up its story. If X-Men continues from here with just a teenage clone, it will look from the outside like the story has returned to the status quo without the confusing doubling of having both a young and an old Laura.

Xavier Replacement Revealed As Marvel Reveals New X-Men Status Quo For 2024

One of the teasers seen in this year's Timeless hints that the iconic Magneto could replace Xavier as the leader of the X-Men in the mutant's new era.

This kind of confusion is something Marvel editorial wants to avoid. In an interview with AIPT, Marvel's X-Men Editor-in-Chief Jordan D. White confirmed that his advice X-Men creatives is to avoid doubling characters In a continuity that already has its fair share of clones and doppelgängers:

I warn people about doubles. We don't need extra doubles. But with the X-Men, in particular, you already have hundreds of characters — do you need five versions of the same character in our universe? The answer is no, no. …nothing against the character or the stories done with him, but we had Storm of Blood and this is another Storm. “Well, he's completely different—he's a vampire.” Yes it is. But he's still a version of Storm. Could be Blood Storm in alternate universe stories or something. We don't need it in this universe. Which doesn't mean we can't do a story involving alternate reality characters. I think this is a great idea. Tell me a good story. This is the most important thing.

The original Laura is dead, and a new clone is now available that replicates the version fans know. Marvel has little reason to bring back such an impressive character death.

There's another Laura that's still around… For now

Wolverine's Daughter Is A Clone Again, Just Not From Him

while The original Laura Kinney just met her endfans at least get a version of the hero to stay in the X-Men canon. Laura's current clone, still going by Wolverine, is alive and well…at least for the moment. Recently Wolverine #42 (From Victor LaValle, Benjamin Percy, Cory Smith, and Oren Junior) The Wolverine family was attacked by Sabretooth's new army. These villains killed Wolverine's son Akihiro and his guardian Quentin Quire. #43 – kidnapped little Laura.

Ironically, if this Laura survives in the X-Men canon, then the character who was once a clone of Wolverine will now be a clone again, but this time of herself. This is a type of twisted knot X-Men – Half of Cyclops' family is made up of her future children, but that's another reason why Marvel simply let the older, less familiar, but still original Laura die and continue with the younger version – in line with her most popular incarnations – now may again be referred to as a clone.

Laura Kinney's surviving clone evolves

Although Laura is dead and gone, her heir is living her best life. Not just the main part of the Laura clone Sabretooth War event, but it also takes its own Wolverine solo series. Marvel seems more than happy to ditch the original Laura and go ahead with her expected clone.

The story dedicated to Tro Laura's final act is a pleasant surprise, given the Krakoan age provided. a fantastic way to reboot several characters who have gone too far or reached their story's natural conclusion. In contrast, fans can draw their own conclusions about Magneto being brought back from the afterlife by Storm, contrasting Beast's complete villainization until being killed in favor of an uncorrupted clone.

Laura Kinney Lived and Died a True Hero

Laura fought for a century to give the X-Men a chance to survive

while fans keep a familiar version of Laura Kinney around (if he survives Sabretooth's master plan), the X-Men the franchise has made it clear many times that the clones are their own people. From Cable's evil double Strife to Jean Grey's mystical “sister” Madelyne Pryor to Gabrielle “Honey Badger” Kinney, a tiny duplicate of Laura herself, the clone is not the original, and vice versa.

This means that Laura Kinney Entered the comic canon as X-23 in 2004, it was created as a living weapon, but has just died, finding its own identity as a new weapon. Wolverine among his brothers, friends and loves.

X-Men #31 and Wolverine #43 available now from Marvel Comics.
