Black Myth: Wukong sold 10 million copies in less than a week. Developer Game Science broke the news on X and claimed that the action-RPG has also reached 3 million concurrent players across all platforms.
Earlier this week, SteamDB estimates suggested that the title had sold well on PC after has accumulated approximately 2.2 million concurrent playersAs highlighted by GameDiscoverCo-founder Simon CarlessMost of these players were in China, the homeland of developer Game Science.
Black Myth: Wukong It has its roots in Chinese mythology and has become a sort of symbol of the region's development.
The project was launched on August 20, 2024 for PC and PlayStation 5. The Xbox version was delayed due to optimization issues and a definitive release date has not yet been announced.
“PC and PS5 players will be able to enjoy the full game starting August 20, 2024. We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards, so it will not be released at the same time as the other platforms,” read a FAQ on the Game Science website“We apologize for the delay and are committed to keeping the wait for Xbox players to a minimum. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.”
This is not the only challenge that Game Science faces. According to a extensive report from IGN Published in November 2023, the Chinese study has fostered a corporate culture rife with deep-seated sexism which manifested itself externally in public statements and images shared by studio executives.
“In the eyes of many players, [Game Science] has a remarkably negative reputation,” said an anonymous Chinese game designer, speaking to IGN about the studio’s reputation. “I admire their dedication and work. I had high hopes for their game until I came across their misogynistic remarks around 2021, which were reported in the news.”
