After 61 years X-Men they finally revealed the true meaning of the founding member's code name. The X-Men is a sprawling franchise with many characters, many of whom take their cues from the original founding members. In the episode's opening sequence, Forge watches a clip of Hank McCoy, AKA the Beast, years before he transformed into his blue, furry form. Addressing a group of scientists, McCoy emphasizes the need for science to better understand mutations. Although McCoy's tone is ambiguous, there is a hint that he, too, wants to be treated. McCoy concludes his speech by saying that science is about “taming the beast.”

Forge notes the irony here: by trying to escape his mutation, the Beast actually got a huge upgrade.

The Beast is one of the most attractive members of the X-Men

The animal's contradictory nature has made it a fan favorite

The The monster is both a study in contradictions and a character that subverts expectations. Animal mutation is purely physical. Originally portrayed as a crude human brute, the Beast quickly became the smooth-talking mastermind of the X-Men. The animal's natural intelligence and friendly nature belied its appearance. In the 1972s Amazing adventures #11, The Monster, trying to get rid of his mutation, changed himself even more. At first, the Beast had gray fur, but over time it became the trademark blue. The beast was even more terrifying now.

Then an amazing thing happened: The monster seemed to find himself. The X-Men were on hiatus during the mutation, and he would drift between the Avengers and Defenders before reuniting with the other founders to become X-Factor. By trying to escape his true nature, the Beast (apparently) paid the price. Hank realized that being a mutant wasn't a bad thing and he was going to enjoy it. Animal, regardless of his team, was always a great morale officer, full of hard-earned empathy and compassion.

Fans of Hank McCoy see in this issue that he is at the beginning of his career and wants nothing more than to be “normal”. The current Beast wouldn't even talk and, as seen in Krakoa, would go to any lengths to protect mutants. This founding member of this change X-Men had a deep character and made for a satisfying character arc, and the origin of his codename reflects that.
