Mobile publisher Zynga has canceled its web3 game, Sugar CityOver the weekend, it revealed that it had sold “all the products and assets” of the title to developer web3 D20 Labs.
Zynga was first revealed Sugar City last year, joining several studios of the time (such as Saw AND Enix Square) in adopting web3 and blockchain for gaming. The developer was the first major mobile studio to make a web3 game and has touted it as a future leader in “trust, transparency, and accessibility” for the genre.
As noted by D20 Marketing Managerthe studio is made up entirely of the former Zynga web3 team who built Sugar City for starters. Its leaders, Matt Wolf and Tommy Ngo, have served as vice president and general manager of the department, respectively.
In its statement, D20 explained that the handover has been months in the making and that it intends to continue the old web3 team's plan to “create the future of rewarded gaming.”
“This is a historic moment,” he wrote. “We are excited to explore a world of limitless possibilities.”
It's unclear what prompted Zynga to sell Sugar City and its web3 department, or if it still has any interest in web3. Many studios that previously focused on the technology have since cooled down on it, although Sega reported still has some interest in it.
