The popularity of the Fallout TV show doubled sales of the series' board games and sold out the official role-playing game.

The world has caught Fallout fever following the success of the first season of the Amazon-produced series adapting Bethesda’s beloved role-playing video game series. The adventures of Lucy, Maximus, and the cunning cowboy Ghoul (Walton Goggin) have people clamoring for more post-apocalyptic stories, and that includes several Fallout board games from Modiphius.

According to BoardGameWire, the British publisher is enjoying a surge in interest and sales thanks to the first broadcast of eight episodes of Fallout. Amazon claims that 65 million people tuned in to the game during the first two weeks, cementing its place just behind The Lord of the Rings prequel, Rings of Power, in terms of most-watched titles on the platform.

A Modiphius spokesperson told BoardGameWire that the Fallout fervor began before the TV show even started, and that they sold out of their entire stock of the Fallout RPG core rulebooks and forced them to restock (you can currently pre-order the book on Modiphius’ website). They similarly sold out copies of the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare starter set, which lets two players jump into the miniatures game based largely on the designs and story of Fallout 4. Modiphius claims that more stock of that title should be arriving in the coming weeks.

Modiphius’ monthly sales apparently more than doubled following the release of the Fallout TV series, which focused largely on tabletop role-playing game material, and a surge in website visits (and therefore, in the publisher’s mind, interest) in its upcoming Fallout Factions game. Smaller and faster-paced than Wasteland Warfare, the upcoming skirmish game will let players engage in narrative-driven battles and gradually develop their motley crew of survivors, mutants, robots, and demons.

Recently, Modiphius has released a series of miniatures inspired by Lucy and company (including Dogmeat!) that players can use in their own home games. It wouldn't be surprising to see an adventure or sourcebook for the tabletop RPG that weaves an adventure through the series' version of the West Coast wastelands, across all the vaults, Shady Sands, and beyond. Nothing's stopping you from doing that right now, though. Go ahead and put Kyle McLaughlin in his blue jumpsuit in your game.

Fallout mania is also paying off for Magic: The Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast. The recent Universes Beyond Commander set, which sold a collection of four 100-card preconstructed decks for the popular collectible card game format, has sold better than any other Commander product, according to the company. The prominent characters, locations, and objects depicted on cardboard have drawn Fallout fans in droves, helped by the explosive (ahem) success of the TV series. This is expected to continue, as Amazon has already ordered a second season, though no release date has yet been announced.
