Unity CEO Says He's 'Less Focused' on Generative AI

While the video game industry is getting entangled in current AND potential As for the use of generative AI, Unity CEO Matt Bromberg is “less focused” on that at the moment.

Talking to VentureBeatsaid the engine maker is prioritizing “how we can help customers make games more efficiently and less expensively.” While he believes genAI can help with that, there are bigger concerns than controversial technology.

“Unity is agnostic to where the 3D asset comes from. It can be created in AI,” he said. “When you make games, you put your assets into the engine and then you start building. We’re interested in that moment and everything that comes after that.”

Companies like EA and Microsoft have touted the potential of generative AI as a much-needed resource assist to game development. Blomberg clearly shares this belief, but also believes that making games will always be the biggest “pain point” in the process.

In theory, pre-built engines like Unity and Godot can reduce that friction, genAI or not. He believes the former is “uniquely positioned” to help by obfuscating the complexity of the engine and the broader development process.

However, he didn’t dismiss the potential of genAI either. He believes the technology will eventually have a “significant impact” on software, even if the bubble inevitably bursts. “That goes for games and everything else,” he acknowledged.

There is a “challenge” for blockchain game developers, who haven’t gone mainstream, Blomberg continued. The focus on monetization has hurt the genre more than it has helped, but it’s also a problem he thinks will be solved over time.

“In the video game industry, you can always count on people innovating to create new things. It's probably just a matter of time, but I haven't seen it yet.”
