Normally $180, Fjallraven’s Vidda Pro Ventilated Pants are now on sale for $135, and while that price tag may seem steep for a pair of outdoor pants, they’re worth the money. They’re among the best-selling hiking pants on REI, earning 51 five-star ratings from satisfied customers who say they’re “durable” and “designed to be comfortable.” They come in cool color combinations with abrasion panels in complementary neutral tones, but you can also get them in solid colors like black and brown. They’re available in European waist sizes 44 to 58 (US sizes 30 to 40), and some tall and short sizes are available. They run small, so be sure to measure your waist before ordering.

These outdoor pants have a different construction than most U.S.-designed models, as they feature multiple pockets on the front of each thigh instead of on the sides like traditional cargo pants, but they do have small side pockets for things like pocket knives or other thin tools. The large bellows pockets have snap buttons, and the interior is divided into useful compartments. Despite the business end of the front, you won’t find any pockets on the back, so be forewarned if that’s a deal-breaker. We found these to be unnecessary and could even get in the way when doing anything outdoors. The material is also a star feature, made from G-1000, a tough, waxed textile made from recycled polyester and organic cotton that wicks away moisture and can be re-waxed to extend its waterproofing.
We own six pairs of Fjallraven pants in various configurations, but the Vidda Pro Ventilated Pants are the ones we wear the most. The thick fabric provides a ton of protection from branches and thorns, and the zippered sides let you ventilate your legs when it’s a little too hot; just zip them back up when you need a little extra warmth. Pocket organization makes it easy to carry a variety of outdoor essentials, and adjustable hems at the cuffs let you adjust the fit to keep out dust and debris or allow for more airflow.
